Jacksonville Jazz Society

Mission

Created in 2009, the Jacksonville Jazz Society (JJS) is a volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, membership organization, dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and presentation of various styles of traditional and contemporary jazz music. We support live events, broadcasts, and collaborate with various Jazz and educational organizations.

Through the establishment of our Wayne Barlow Scholarship Award, we offer annual financial scholarships to talented high school seniors and college students pursuing excellence in jazz performance and studies.

Emilio Magalhaes

Born in Mineola, New York, Emilio Magalhaes was introduced to music early by his father, a NYC Latin percussionist, who exposed him to Latin, Brazilian, Jazz, Soul/R&B, and house music. By his pre-teen years, Emilio was already playing bongos, congas, and timbales, and throughout middle and high school he performed with the Concert Band, Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, and Indoor Percussion, mastering instruments such as the vibraphone, marimba, snare drum, and timpani.

Emilio’s dedication has earned him numerous honors, including 1st Chair percussionist in the High School Wind Ensemble and Clay County Honor Band, membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the Florida Seal of Fine Arts Certificate, the Clay County Distinction of Fine Arts Award, and the John Philip Sousa Award. He also won the 1st Annual Clay County Student Composition Contest (Electronic Music Category). Currently enrolled at Florida State College at Jacksonville, Emilio continues to hone his skills as a percussionist and composer, pursuing excellence in jazz and other musical genres.
